Ex-Nairobi Councillors currently serving as Members of Parliament

A total of 55 Councillors were elected by the people to represent 55 wards that existed then.

The formation of county Governments in 2013 saw the end of the city council of Nairobi which was the local authority governing the city.

With devolution, Nairobi was divided into 17 subcounties, with 85 wards.

Before then, Nairobi was divided into 8 divisions which also served as parliamentary constituencies.

A total of 55 city Councillors were elected by the people to represent the 55 Wards that existed then.

After elections, the party with the majority of Councillors got to nominate 12 Councillors while the minority were given 8 nominated slots

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor were elected by the Councillors to serve a two year term after which they could also seek reelection.

Former councilors have still found their way to leadership whether it's at City Hall, Senate or the National Assembly.

Benson Mutura was Kimathi Ward Councillor and became Makadara's first MP in 2013 winning with 37,644 votes.

In 2017 he was defeated by former Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa .

Mutura is currently the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly.

Embakasi West MP George Theuri.

Former Umoja One ward Councilor George Theuri was elected as Embakasi West first MP after garnering 40,606 in 2013 election.

In 2017 he was reelected and is seeking a third term in the August 9 polls under Deputy President William Ruto’s UDA party.

Former Councilor for Makongeni-Kaloleni ward and Former Nairobi Mayor (2011-2013) George Aladwa is the current Makadara MP.

Embakasi North also elevated former Muthurwa Councillor James Mwangi Gakuya to area MP on a TNA ticket in 2013. He won the seat in 2017 and is seeking re-election under UDA Party.

Former nominated Councillor Timothy Wanyonyi Wetang’ula has been Westlands MP for the past 10 years .

However, he has taken his ambitions on a higher level as he seeks to become Nairobi’s fourth Governor.

Simba Arati was also a nominated councillor and has been Dagoretti North MP since 2013 when he was first elected.

He has however left city politics and is seeking to become the second Governor of Kisii County.

Former Nairobi Mayor and Councillor John Ndirangu got 37,168 votes to become the Embakasi Central MP in 2013 .

He lost in the Jubilee Primaries in 2017 but has made a comeback as he seeks to go back to parliament to represent Embakasi Central.

Nominated MP Maina Kamanda

Maina Kamanda is a former Ngara Councillor who lost to Bishop Margaret Wanjiru in 2007. 

He however, bounced back to clinch the seat after two defeats by then ODM candidate Bishop Margaret Wanjiru during the 2007 general election and later during the 2010 by-election.

He later won the seat in 2013, but lost to Charles Njagua in the Jubilee Primaries in 2017.

He is currently a nominated MP.
