The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has commenced voter registration exercise in Nairobi’s Westlands constituency.
The exercise is part of the electoral body’s Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) that was officially launched on Monday, October 4, at the Nakuru Athletic Club and will run through to November 2, 2021.
Speaking as the drive began at the Kitisuru Chief’s camp, Westlands MP, Timothy Wanyonyi called on the government to avail the Sh14 billion IEBC requires to conduct elections.
“The people at the treasury should not limit giving IEBC money. Let them give that budget so that they can manage to run an election without any problems,” he said.
Westlands constituency Returning officer Catherine Kamau noted that other areas in the constituency were experiencing challenges with the voter registration machines, but they are working to resolve the challenges.
The exercise, according to IEBC targets to register six million new voters who have attained 18 years and have acquired national identification cards or have valid passports, or other citizens who were not registered in previous registrations.
The exercise will continue across all the 1,450 Wards in Kenya.
