The global operational fleet of nuclear-powered submarines remains dominated by a handful of military powers, according to data from Statista.

As of January 2026, the United States operates the largest fleet, with 71 nuclear-powered submarines in active service.

China ranks second with 32 submarines, reflecting its rapid expansion and modernisation of naval capabilities.

Russia follows closely with 29 nuclear-powered submarines, maintaining a significant undersea presence.

The United Kingdom operates 10 such submarines, while France has nine in service.

India has a much smaller fleet, with two nuclear-powered submarines currently operational.

The figures highlight the concentration of nuclear submarine capabilities among major global powers and underscore China’s emergence as the second-largest operator worldwide.
