World Diabetes Day, established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and WHO, raises global awareness about diabetes prevention, management, and treatment.
It coincides with the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin, whose therapy helps control blood sugar levels.
Diabetes, if unmanaged, can lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and amputations. Observances include screenings, education drives, walks, fundraisers, and media campaigns.
The 2024 theme, “Breaking Barriers, Bridging Gaps”, emphasises improving access to care and reducing health inequalities, highlighting the urgent need for worldwide diabetes awareness and action.
