World Stroke Day, established by the World Stroke Organization, is marked every October 29 to raise global awareness about stroke prevention, treatment, and recovery.
Stroke remains one of the leading causes of long-term disability and death worldwide, with an estimated one in four adults expected to experience a stroke in their lifetime.
Each year, about 12 million people suffer from a stroke, yet up to 80 per cent of cases are preventable through healthy lifestyle choices and risk-factor control.
Key risk factors include high blood pressure, smoking, obesity, and diabetes.
This year’s theme, “Every Minute Counts,” emphasises the urgent need to recognise stroke symptoms early and act FAST—Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to seek help.
The campaign calls for stronger prevention strategies and public education, reminding everyone that stroke can affect anyone, anywhere, anytime.
