Varicose veins occur when pressure builds in superficial veins, often worsened by long periods of standing or sitting.

Risk factors include age, obesity, pregnancy, leg injury, and smoking.

While usually not serious, untreated varicose veins can lead to inflammation, swelling, blood clots, or skin complications such as rashes, sores, ulcers, and tissue damage.

Common symptoms include aching, burning, heaviness, mild leg swelling, and skin colour changes.

Diagnosis is through duplex ultrasound, which examines blood flow and vein structure.

Treatments range from compression stockings and laser therapy to surgical interventions.
