In Summary

According to the 2025 Global Report on Food Crises, Africa continues to face soaring inflation in 2024, with South Sudan recording an alarming 386.9% rise in August — the highest on the continent.

Ethiopia follows at 32.2% in January, while Burundi saw a 22.5% surge in October.

Kenya, with a 7.9% rise in January, joins other East African nations like Djibouti (6.6%) and Rwanda (5.7%) in experiencing significant inflation.

Even relatively stable countries like Somalia (0.6%) and Uganda (0.5%) reported increases.

Inflation reflects rising costs of goods and services, diminishing purchasing power and worsening food insecurity, especially for low-income households.

The report attributes this trend to conflict, economic instability, and climate shocks, stressing the need for robust policy responses to stabilise economies and protect vulnerable populations from deepening poverty.
