Global energy demand rose by 2.2% in 2024, outpacing the decade-long average of 1.3%, according to the International Energy Agency’s Global Energy Review 2025.
This surge was driven by increased electricity consumption, which grew by 4.3%, fueled by higher demand for cooling, industrial activity, and the expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence applications.
Renewables led the supply growth, accounting for 38% of the increase, followed by natural gas at 28%.
Emerging economies, particularly in Asia, contributed to four-fifths of the global demand growth, underscoring the region's pivotal role in the evolving energy landscape
