There are a myriad of issues that cause mental health problems.
They include childhood abuse, trauma, or neglect, social isolation or loneliness and severe or long-term stress.
Other causes are experiencing discrimination and stigma, including racism, social disadvantage, poverty or debt.
Bereavement (losing someone close to you) and having a long-term physical health condition can also trigger mental health problems.
