According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, hope means, “to expect with confidence” or “expectation of fulfilment or success.” In essence, positive expectation. In a hopeful state, you work on a project for months, expecting to close the deal; you expect good results from your effort. To have expectations is to bet on the future, knowing that somehow, you will win. In life, hope is vital.
When Hope is Crushed
The concept of hope sounds utopic in the context of life’s realities. If you live long enough, you will discover that the innocent, childlike hope with which you began life, will be crushed at some point. Young people are full of hope, but as people get older, it becomes a tricky affair. To some people, hope is a cruel joke.
On your wedding day, you were full of joy and hope for a blissful marriage; years later, you're signing divorce papers, and wondering what went wrong. You started that business in hopeful excitement, and now you’re filing for bankruptcy. You did your best to raise your child right, but you’re disappointed by the outcome, and you wonder where you missed it. Life takes us all through moments when hope is crushed. However, it doesn’t mean it’s game over.
Let Hope Rise Again
Unexpected failures, endured over time, eventually steal our sense of hope. Consequently, expecting anything good becomes painful. Here, people would resign to failure due to the emotional wounds from years of life’s crushing experiences. But, can hope to be revived?
Yes. You can hope again. But where do you start? First, lessons learned. Often, life’s blows make you forget that the lessons learned are the resources you need for a fresh start. You’re no longer the naïve hopeful. Now, with experience and insight, you know better and can do better – it is the basis for new hope.
Next, strategise and execute excellently. Based on wisdom from your past failures and disappointments, create a good plan for the future. Then, execute with excellence and precision. Your learnings make your chances of failure slim; you’re most likely to succeed. Find the courage to try again – but this time, differently. Give hope a chance. Be strong; you will win.
