FAKE: Digital card stating William Ruto won’t take part in a presidential re-run is fabricated

The remarks, if factual, would have been covered by nearly all media houses.

In Summary

•The fake card, with the Nation Africa logo, emerged on social media on the very day the Supreme Court finished the hearing of the presidential petition on Friday, September 2, 2022.

•The fake card claimed the outgoing Deputy President said the people had already spoken by casting their votes and would, therefore, not take part in any repeat election.

A digital card claiming that President-elect William Ruto will not participate in a rerun if his election is nullified by the Supreme Court of Kenya is FAKE.

The fake card, with the Nation Africa logo, emerged on social media on the very day the Supreme Court finished the hearing of the presidential petition on Friday, September 2, 2022.

The fake card claimed the outgoing Deputy President said the people had already spoken by casting their votes and would, therefore, not take part in any repeat election.

“We shall not participate in a re-run if results of the Presidential election are nullified. The people already spoke by casting their votes. We shall hold vigils and prayers away from polling stations or just stay at home,” the fake card stated.

The fact checker has, however, established that the card is fake.

Nation Africa has denied authoring such a digital card.

While flagging the card as fake, the media company said: “Please be advised that this card doing rounds on social media is fake”.

Also, a scan through Ruto’s social media pages and other local news outlets also showed that the outgoing Deputy President had not made such remarks.

The remarks, if factual, would have been covered by nearly all media houses but that was not the case.
