HOAX: Shell Energy not rewarding cash prizes for its 130th anniversary

A website link purporting to belong to Shell Energy and offering free gifts in celebration of the oil company’s 100th anniversary is a HOAX.

The link has widely been shared on social media platforms Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.

The website asks participants to participate in a survey and will stand a chance of winning Sh9,000, as part of Shell’s 130-year anniversary celebration.

The link opens to a website with the Shell logo on the top left and reads: “Congratulation! Today you have been chosen to participate in our survey. It will only take a minute and you will receive a fantastic prize,”

It goes on to claim that each week, 100 users are randomly chosen to win Sh9,000.

The aim of the survey, the website notes is to improve the quality of service for users and participants will be rewarded 100 per cent.

Below the message, the website asks participants if they know Shell with a Yes and No option given.

The second question seeks the age range of the participant upon answering it further enquires on how you think about Shell with options varying from Very good, Unbelievable, OK and not so good.

Lastly, the survey asks the participants sex with the options Male and Female given.

Upon answering, the participant gets three chances to unbox a gift and has three attempts to take.

However, upon unboxing the gift, the participant is required to share the message on WhatsApp groups to be able to be delivered.

The Star sought to find the authenticity of the claim and followed the link.

First, it is observed that the survey inaccurately notes that Shell is celebrating its 130th anniversary which is not the case as it has been in existence for 114 years.

It was founded in 1907.

Vivo Energy Kenya has flagged the post as fake.

On its official website the company flagged the post noting;

“Our attention that a survey link claiming to be part of Shell’s 130th anniversary is circulating online. It is a phishing scam meant to steal your personal data. Please be aware that this is not from Shell,”

They further advise members of the public to be cautious not to fall victim to this scam and enquire on ongoing promotions through: [email protected]

“Members of the public are advised not to engage with the message. Please be diligent when clicking on links claiming to be from Shell.
