Just why is the government applying double standards in the implementation of Covid-19 protocols? Despite the existence of cessation of movement in and out of five counties, including Nairobi, politicians have been moving through with ease. Some top politicians have also been posting pictures on their social media pages hosting delegations from upcountry. They include elders and other groups. As this happens, ordinary Kenyans have been blocked, arrested and charged for violating the protocols. Many Kenyans have taken to social media to question whether the strict measures are only for the ordinary man and not the high and mighty who violate them with abandon.
The spray of a skunk can pass for perfume compared to the smell that has engulfed Nairobi’s Eastleigh, Section Three Estate. Garbage has piled up at the junction of Eldoret Road and 19th Avenue covering about a kilometre. Residents, and especially young children, must hop, skip and jump as they navigate the rotting refuse. They wonder why the authorities concerned are yet to act on the mess that is now posing as a health hazard. A section of business people is planning to petition the Nairobi Metropolitan Services led by director-general Mohammed Badi (picture) to act on their plight.
A police constable operating a club in one of the sprawling Nairobi slums is at odds with his colleagues. The club operates in total disregard of the Covid-19 protocols. The officer has been threatening those who dare question or cross his path. The club is now said to be providing the perfect hideout for criminals. The officer, who claims to have a wide network of godfathers protecting him, never reports to work. The club has been in operation for two decades. Locals are appealing to the Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to step in and tame the officer.
Senior security officials in a county riddled with clan clashes are a worried lot. This is after it emerged they had sanctioned the issuance of guns to private conservancies without strict checks. It has emerged that some of the weapons may have been used to commit crimes, especially clan violence, that have claimed lives in the region. A mole has revealed that the police headquarters has demanded details of those issued with the guns after it was also revealed the headquarters office was not involved in the process. Officers have now panicked that they will be held liable for the clashes.
