Kosgei, Toili dominate AK North Rift championships in Kitale

The championships brought together five counties of West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana and hosts Trans Nzoia.

World cross country junior bronze medalist Pamela Kosgei and East Africa 400m champion Samuel Toili recorded victories at the Athletics Kenya North Rift championships held on Friday at the Ndura Sports Complex in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.

The championships brought together five counties of West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Turkana and hosts Trans Nzoia.

With her mission to represent the country at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Kosgei, the young sister of world marathon record holder Bridgid Kosgei won the 3,000m steeplechase title to book a slot at the national championships to be staged at Moi Stadium, Kasarani in a fortnight.

Kosgei, of Elgeyo Marakwet county, won the title in 10:05.2 ahead of compatriot Martha Chelimo (10:43.9) and Trans Nzoia’s Caren Jepchigan-11:05.3 in a race that attracted just six athletes.

“The victory has given me a chance to compete at the national championships as I want to run for the country again in Budapest,” said Kosgei.

Toiliwas the best performer as he led Trans Nzoia county to a clean sweep in the 400m race, setting the fastest time of 46.7 in Heat 1.

Kelvin Kipkorir won Heat 2 in 49.1 with Hillary Misigo third in 49.4.
