The government of South Sudan has firmly denied widespread rumors circulating on social media claiming that President Salva Kiir Mayardit has died.
In a statement released on May 14, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation dismissed the claims as false, malicious, and aimed at destabilising the country.
“The President is alive, in excellent health, and fully engaged in his duties,” the ministry stated, reassuring citizens, neighboring countries, and the international community.
“These are entirely unfounded claims, fabricated by individuals and groups intent on causing unrest,” said Hon. K. Kumba.
The government emphasized that President Kiir continues to lead the country actively, focusing on development and peace-building efforts.
Officials condemned what they described as a deliberate campaign of misinformation intended to create panic and confusion.
They warned that such disinformation poses a serious threat to South Sudan’s fragile peace and unity.
“This fake news is an attack on our national unity and a reckless effort to derail the progress South Sudan has made,” the statement read.
Citizens were urged to ignore the rumors and rely only on official government channels for accurate information.
Authorities also cautioned against spreading unverified claims and said those responsible for inciting fear could face legal consequences.
Government services across the country continue to operate normally, and the overall situation remains calm.
The ministry concluded by reaffirming its commitment to transparency and stability, vowing to take firm action against the spread of false information.
