Earlier, DRC President Tshisekedi commuted the death sentences of three US citizens involved in the May coup to life imprisonment.

The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has handed over the Americans who were previously facing death penalty for participation in the 2024 coup attempt into US custody, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said on Tuesday.

The US strongly condemns the armed attacks of May 19th and supports the DRC authorities in holding those responsible appropriately accountable, Bruce told reporters.

US citizens Marcel Malanga, Tyler Christian Thomson, and Zalman Pollum Benjamin were sentenced to death by a military court on January 27 for a coup attempt.

The development comes as the DRC is in talks with the US over a mineral deal, and the parties have recently agreed on a way forward for its development, according to the Congolese presidency.
