A Nairobi man in court pleading to be sentenced to get food in jail following the hard living conditions in the country.

The high cost of living has left many individuals grappling with financial stress and hardship to the point where others contemplate suicide.

The mental and emotional toll of struggling to make ends meet can be overwhelming, leading to feelings of hopelessness and despair.

The situation saw a 32-year-old man in Nairobi on Friday plead with a magistrate to find him guilty of attempted suicide so he can get free food in prison.

The man said he was born in the Makadara area of Likoni but lives in Utawala Nairobi.

He was arraigned after attempting suicide by jumping over the ferry into the ocean, hoping to die by drowning.

He pleaded with the magistrate to put him in prison believing he would have a better life there.

"Let me just tell you the truth, save me by putting me in prison because this suicidal feeling is not good. In prison I will eat food and live," he said.

He said when he attempted to jump over the ferry, the attendant did not even bother to stop him.

The Nairobi man told the court that life was not always that bad for him but had deteriorated over time.

"Niandikie tu food your honor na nitafanya kazi. Unaeza ona mtu hii dunia anateseka na si kupenda kwake. Niandikie food nyingi na nitawafanyia kazi," he said.

Which loosely translates to: Just write me food your honor and I will work. You might see someone in this world suffering and it is not their doing.

He said he lives alone and that he separated from his wife and she went ahead to remarry but did not give a reason for separation.

"Just food your honor and I will live with fellow prisoners and wardens well," he pleaded.
