Lawyer Donald Kipkorir has narrated an episode where he was overcome by emotions and cried in court after his client was acquitted.
In a statement on social media, Kipkorir said his Nigerian-English client had been charged with alleged fraud at the Kibera Law courts in 2020.
"When I met the accused and he told me his case, I knew he had been mishandled by the police, prosecutors and his previous lawyer. And the complaint was spurious as it was a commercial transaction that failed," he said.
The lawyer revealed that the genesis of his emotional reaction upon his client's acquittal was the fact that he would finally get a chance to meet his newborn baby who was born in his absence in London.
He said whereas the client was granted bail during that period, he couldn't travel to be with his wife and child since he was ordered to deposit his passport in court as part of the bail terms.
Kipkorir said the trial magistrate Derick Kuto found the charges against his client to be bogus and acquitted him.
"As the Trial Magistrate read the judgment and methodically demolished the Prosecution case, I was overwhelmed with emotion knowing that my client hasn’t been able to see his son since he was born in 2021. I shed a tear."
The lawyer said immediately on acquittal, the client called his mother in London to inform her of the good news.
He said the mother prayed for him (Kipkorir) "in the longest prayer anyone has done for me."
"She told me she will fly to Kenya to personally bless me. It is not every day that a happy client prays for their lawyer. Today, I saw the heavens open up as Edwin’s mother prayed for me. I shed another tear as she prayed," Kipkorir said.
