In Summary

  • Napeitom-Kapedo ward has been turned into a killing field by gun-wielding individuals who seem to operate without fear of apprehension by the authorities.
  • This deeply entrenched barbarism and incivility have caused unimaginable mental torture to residents.
Rendile, Borana elders recover 48 goats stolen in Marsabit during a raid on Sunday, July 10.

The new administration should make it a priority to decisively change response measures and wipe out the brutality meted out on the people living in Turkana by armed criminals who have made it a hobby to kill and walk scot-free.

Last week's murder of 11 people, including eight police officers, in Turkana East has once again opened the debate as to whether the heinous acts are still cattle rustling as reported by the media or terrorist activities by criminals with the intention to wipe out a targeted group in the Suguta Valley.

A similar incident happened last month where suspected arsonists torched houses and burnt seven people beyond recognition at Napeitom.

This deeply entrenched barbarism and incivility by elements who illegally own firearms have caused unimaginable mental torture to residents.

Residents have been denied their constitutional rights and development programmes that would benefit them.

The expressive undervaluing of the magnitude of these attacks and knee-jerk reactions whenever they happen have been the greatest undoing of the institutions tasked to protect people and their property.

Napeitom-Kapedo ward has been turned into a killing field and banditry haven by gun-wielding individuals who seem to operate without fear of apprehension by the authorities.

The recent announcement by Turkana South MP Ariko Namoit that he will sponsor the Loss of Wealth Compensation Bill in parliament to force government to compensate victims of banditry attacks is wise.

It should be supported and fast-tracked by other legislators in banditry prone corridors.
