The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has opened the 2026–27 subsequent loan application window for continuing university and TVET students, urging eligible learners to submit their applications early to avoid delays in disbursement.

The application window is open to continuing degree and diploma students who were placed through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

HELB said eligible students can apply for funding through the Higher Education Fund (HEF) using the USSD code *642#.

The subsequent loan application exercise is running concurrently with first-time applications for newly placed degree and diploma students joining institutions in the 2026–27 academic year.

HELB encouraged students to apply as early as possible, noting that loan processing is undertaken in phases and early applicants are more likely to receive their funds sooner.

To apply, students must have a Safaricom line registered in their name and a national identity card.

Students who submitted their first applications using their KCSE index numbers because they did not have national identity cards at the time should update their details on the Higher Education Fund portal.

Updating personal information will help prevent delays and other complications during future loan processing.

How to apply for a subsequent HELB loan

  • Dial *642# using a Safaricom line registered in your name.
  • Select Register.
  • Enter national ID serial number.
  • Enter national ID number.
  • Create a four-digit PIN for accessing HELB services.
  • Return to the home menu and log in.
  • Select Subsequent Application.
  • Choose the appropriate funding product: Degree – Undergraduate students. Diploma – TVET students.
  • Confirm their institution details.
  • Accept the terms and conditions.
  • Select Request Loan.
  • Choose referred payment option: Mobile Money or Bank Account.
  • Enter the four-digit PIN to complete the application.

HELB said an application is successfully submitted once the applicant receives a confirmation pop-up message beginning with the word "Bravo..."

"Please keep the confirmation message for future reference," the board said.

Students experiencing challenges during the application process have been advised to seek assistance through HELB's official customer care channels or visit the nearest HELB service centre.
