Nairobi Water has been feted with the Geographical Information System Excellence Award by Esri Eastern Africa at the East Africa Water Utilities Transformation Forum. The recognition places the City utility alongside a select group of pioneering utilities across the continent that are harnessing geospatial intelligence and digital technology to fundamentally reshape how water and sewerage services are delivered.
The award, widely regarded as the highest accolade in spatial technology application within the water sector, acknowledges the Company's outstanding use of GIS to drive operational excellence and improve customer service.
“This recognition is not just about technology — it is a testament to our unwavering commitment to serving Nairobi better. We are increasingly embracing smart technologies to improve operational efficiency,” said Managing Director Martin Nang’ole.
One of the most notable game-changers have been the implementation of enterprise GIS solutions that have transformed how customer and infrastructure information is managed. Through GIS-driven mapping initiatives, the Company has successfully mapped thousands of customer connections and utility assets, significantly improving visibility of the water distribution network and enabling more accurate planning, monitoring, and service delivery.
The integration of GIS with the Meter Reading System (MRS) has revolutionised field operations. Meter readers can now navigate directly to customer locations using spatial intelligence, reducing time spent searching for properties and improving reading accuracy and coverage. This has contributed to improved operational efficiency, enhanced accountability, and increased revenue assurance through more reliable billing data.
GIS has also become a critical
tool in supporting network management, asset planning, maintenance activities,
and infrastructure expansion projects. Decision-makers now have access to
real-time spatial information that enables better planning and prioritisation
of investments while improving response times to operational incidents.
The utility’s recently implemented Customer Complaint Management System (CCMS) has transformed how customer issues are handled. The system enables customers to log complaints, track progress, and receive updates throughout the resolution process. Through integration with GIS technologies, complaints can be geographically referenced, allowing operational teams to quickly identify affected areas, prioritize responses, and deploy resources more effectively. This has improved responsiveness, accountability, and overall customer satisfaction. The CCMS is accessible to customers at https://service.nairobiwater.co.ke.
The Customer Contracting Portal has significantly streamlined the process of applying for new water and sewerage connections. Customers can now initiate and track applications digitally, reducing paperwork, improving transparency, and shortening service delivery timelines. The platform has enhanced customer convenience while enabling the Company to process requests more efficiently and maintain greater visibility over application workflows.
“The Company's investments in GIS, smart technologies, data analytics, and digital platforms are ensuring that decision-making is driven by real-time data, resources are deployed with precision, and customers are kept informed and empowered. These transformational technology initiatives ultimately support improved service delivery, financial sustainability, and the long-term resilience of the water network,” said Managing Director Martin Nang’ole.
For years, urban water utilities across Africa have grappled with persistent challenges: inaccurate customer location data, poorly documented assets, revenue leakages, and sluggish response to service disruptions. Nairobi Water has confronted these challenges head-on through sustained, strategic investment in GIS.
“As the Company looks ahead, it remains committed to expanding its digital capabilities, exploring emerging technologies, and placing innovation at the heart of its service delivery mandate. The GIS Excellence Award is not a destination but a milestone on a much longer and more ambitious journey,” affirmed Managing Director Martin Nang’ole.
