Man fatally falls from coconut tree while tapping palm wine in Mombasa

Police said the deceased reportedly lost his footing while climbing the tree to harvest the sap

A man died after falling from a coconut tree while tapping mnazi, a traditional palm wine, in Jomvu Sub-County, Mombasa County.

The police said the victim, identified as Erastus Chombo Dzoga, reportedly lost his footing while climbing the tree to harvest the sap used to produce the popular coastal drink on Sunday evening.

Police visited the scene and found Dzoga lying unresponsive on his back.

Police said there were no visible external injuries on the body.

He was rushed to Coast General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The body was later moved to the hospital’s mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing. 

Such incidents are common in the area.

And a man believed to be a member of the street families was stabbed to death following a fight with another man near the Frontanela Roundabout in Mombasa.

The incident was reported on Sunday after a member of the public alerted police that a man was lying critically injured at the scene.

Police officers rushed to the area and established that two men, both believed to be members of the street families, had engaged in a confrontation for reasons that are yet to be established.

During the altercation, one of the men allegedly drew a knife and stabbed the other several times in the neck before fleeing to an unknown destination.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood and was rushed to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers processed and documented the scene before the body was moved to the hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting identification and a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the murder and are pursuing the suspect, who remains at large.
