Tragedy as miner is killed in explosion at Kuria West gold mine in Migori

Daniel Moseti was reportedly planting explosives inside the mine when an unknown person activated the electrical current from outside.

Detectives in Migori county are investigating the death of a 36-year-old miner who was killed in an explosion inside a mine in Kuria West Subcounty.

According to police, the incident occurred on July 11 when Daniel Moseti Menganyi was reportedly planting explosives inside the mine in preparation for blasting.

Preliminary investigations indicate that an unknown person allegedly activated the electrical current from outside the mine, triggering an explosion while Menganyi was still inside.

The miner sustained severe head and leg injuries and died before he could be rescued. His body was later retrieved from the mine.

Police officers visited and documented the scene.

The body was moved to Kehancha Subcounty Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations are underway to establish who activated the explosives and the circumstances that led to the fatal blast.

This is the latest such incident at the mining sites amid a push for the safety of workers in general.

Meanwhile, police in Uasin Gishu county are investigating the death of a two-year-old girl whose body was recovered from Chepkorio Dam in Kapseret Subcounty.

Police received information from the public at about 5.30 pm on July 11 that the body of a child was floating in the dam in Megun Sublocation, Ngeria Location.

Police officers, accompanied by Scene of Crime personnel, visited the scene and retrieved the body of the child, identified as Tamara Jepchumba, aged about two years.

The scene was documented before the body, which had no visible external injuries, was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the child’s death.

 Elsewhere, police in Kwale county are investigating the death of a 49-year-old worker who was electrocuted while reconnecting electricity at Shimba Hills Trading Centre.

The incident was reported at about 8.30 pm on July 11 by a supervisor at a private company.

The deceased, identified as Sammy Maluki Kilyungi, was part of a team undertaking power line maintenance after electricity had earlier been disconnected to allow the pruning of tree branches near power poles within the shopping centre.

Police said Kilyungi was electrocuted while reconnecting electricity to one of the poles after the pruning exercise.

His colleagues rushed him to Shimba Hills Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police officers visited both the health facility and the scene, where they documented the incident as part of the investigation.

The body was later transferred to Msambweni Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal workplace accident.

And police in Nandi county are investigating the death of an unidentified man whose body was recovered from River Yala in Nandi Central Subcounty.

The incident was reported at about 5.30 pm on July 11 after the body was spotted floating in the river at Taunet B Village, Kapkangani Location.

Police officers rushed to the scene and, with the assistance of members of the public, retrieved the body of an unidentified man believed to be about 60 years old.

The deceased had no visible external injuries.

Crime scene personnel documented and processed the scene before the body was moved to Nandi Hills Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending identification and a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.
