President William Ruto has led Kenyan leaders in celebrating middle-distance sensation Emmanuel Wanyonyi after he shattered the men's 1,000-metre world record at the Monaco Diamond League.
The event marked the end of a 27-year wait for a new global mark in the event.
Wanyonyi produced a stunning performance on Friday night, clocking 2:11.83 to eclipse the previous world record and further cement his place among the world's finest middle-distance runners.
In a congratulatory message, President Ruto hailed the achievement as another milestone showcasing Kenya's enduring dominance in global athletics.
"Congratulations to Emmanuel Wanyonyi on breaking the men's 1,000m world record with a remarkable 2:11.83 at the Monaco Diamond League," the President said.
Ruto said the athlete's historic feat had once again demonstrated the strength of Kenyan athletics on the world stage and filled the nation with pride.
"Wanyonyi's historic achievement has once again shown the world the strength of Kenyan athletics and made our nation immensely proud. His outstanding milestone will inspire many more generations of champions," he added.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen also praised Wanyonyi, describing the performance as proof of the immense potential of Kenya's youth.
"Big congratulations, Emmanuel Wanyonyi, on clocking 2:11.83 in the men's 1,000m to break a 27-year-old world record at the Monaco Diamond League," Murkomen said.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya joined in celebrating the record-breaking run, saying Kenya had once again etched its name in global sporting history.
