Accountant robbed of Sh600,000 after leaving bank

Police are investigating the robbery of a district accountant who was allegedly abducted and robbed of Sh600,000 after leaving a bank in Bungoma County.

The incident occurred on Thursday in the Sikusi area along the Bungoma–Chwele Road.

According to police, the accountant, who works in Sirisia, had withdrawn Sh600,000 from a bank in Bungoma and was travelling on a boda boda at about 12.30 pm when he and the rider noticed a vehicle following them from Bungoma town.

Police said five men, one of them reportedly armed with a pistol, intercepted the motorcycle, forced the accountant and the rider into their vehicle and drove them along a murram road to an unknown destination.

The accountant was robbed of Sh600,000, his national identity card, a withdrawal slip and a Tecno Spark 8 mobile phone.

The motorcycle rider was robbed of Sh390 and an M10 mobile phone. His TVS Star motorcycle was abandoned at the scene.

Police said the two victims were later abandoned in a maize plantation in the Kimilili area. They made their way to Kimilili Police Station and reported the incident.

Officers visited the scene and recovered the abandoned motorcycle. Investigations are ongoing to trace the suspects and recover the stolen property.

Police said investigators suspect the attackers may have had prior information about the cash withdrawal.

As part of the investigation, detectives visited the bank and sought to review CCTV footage to establish whether the suspects had been monitoring transactions before allegedly trailing the victim.

Police said similar incidents have been reported in some urban areas, with victims targeted after withdrawing money from banks.

They said several gangs linked to such robberies have previously been arrested in Nairobi and Machakos following similar complaints.

Investigations are continuing, with detectives also focusing on activities around banking halls where the transactions take place before the attacks.
