The expansion of Suneka Airstrip in Bonchari Constituency, Kisii county is set to begin next week after a new contractor took over the project, Internal Security and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has said.

Speaking during a church fundraiser at Kenyoro SDA Church in the same Constituency, Omollo said the initial contractor had encountered challenges that led to the stalling of the project, prompting the government to appoint a new contractor to fast-track the works.

"There were some challenges with the contractor who was tasked with the modernisation and expansion of the Suneka Airstrip. Following the President's recent visit, a new contractor will proceed with the project," he said.

The PS affirmed that all the necessary documentation had been completed this week, paving the way for the construction works to commence.

He noted the upgrade will significantly boost transport, trade and tourism in the Gusii region as residents will no longer travel to the neighbouring counties to access air travel.

"The residents of Kisii will no longer have to go all the way to Kisumu, Homa Bay or Migori to access flights because this project will make travel much more convenient," Omollo said.

He added that the project is also expected to enhance regional connectivity and create new economic opportunities for the county.

The PS lauded the political leaders in Kisii for working together to promote development projects within the county.

He also called for continued collaboration between leaders, communities and the church, saying that faith-based institutions are instrumental in promoting social cohesion and national unity.

Omollo urged parents to prioritise their children's education, saying the government had significantly invested in the sector to ensure that all students have access to quality education.

On matters of security, the PS warned politicians against using rowdy youth to disrupt opponents' gatherings, adding that such violent attacks had previously led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

His sentiments were echoed by Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi who strongly condemned the political violence that was being witnessed in parts of the county.

Aburi said no responsible leader should condone violence, adding that the people often drawn into political clashes are young people, whose lives are placed at risk.

“I recall the violence that happened at my office last time and still stand firm to condemn such attacks because I do not support any form of violence, and I have never been violent,” she said.

The Woman Rep urged security agencies to take firm action against perpetrators of such violence and work closely with political leaders to continue promoting unity and peaceful coexistence among Kenyans.
