Kenya will on Friday, June 26, 2026, join the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADA), with national celebrations set to take place at the NACADA Miritini Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre in Mombasa.

The event comes as the country continues to confront changing substance abuse trends while strengthening efforts to address the challenge through innovative and community-based interventions.

This year's global theme, "World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses," highlights the need for fresh approaches in tackling drug and substance abuse amid emerging threats.

The commemoration will bring together senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration and the Mombasa County Government.

Also expected are National Government Administration Officers (NGAO), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), youth representatives, individuals in recovery and members of the public.

Organisers say the event reflects a multi-sectoral approach to addressing the drug menace and promoting collective action among stakeholders.

Among the key activities planned are high-level discussions on national drug control policy and public awareness campaigns on emerging synthetic substances, which continue to pose new challenges in the fight against drug abuse.

The event will also feature a showcase of innovative rehabilitation models currently being implemented at the Miritini facility.

In a move aimed at expanding access to treatment, NACADA has enhanced women's recovery services at the centre. The services are offered free of charge as part of efforts to provide inclusive and barrier-free treatment to those seeking help.

The national commemoration comes at a time when Kenya is intensifying efforts to balance law enforcement measures with public health-focused interventions in addressing drug-related challenges.

Officials say the Mombasa event will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the country's commitment to strengthening partnerships, embracing technology-driven prevention strategies and expanding evidence-based treatment programmes.

The gathering is also expected to highlight the role of communities, government agencies and other stakeholders in responding to evolving drug use patterns and supporting recovery efforts.

As preparations for the event enter the final stage, attention is turning to Mombasa, where stakeholders are expected to renew their commitment to innovative solutions in the fight against substance abuse and the pursuit of a resilient, drug-free society.
