Lawyer and political commentator Miguna Miguna has defended the Orange Democratic Movement's (ODM) decision to remove Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as the party's secretary general, saying the move was legally, constitutionally and morally justified.

In a post on X,  Miguna argued that a party's secretary general must support and believe in the political outfit he or she serves.

"ODM is legally, constitutionally and morally right to remove Edwin Sifuna as its secretary general," Miguna said.

He said personal opinions about ODM or its leadership should not influence the matter, insisting that party officials are expected to uphold and advance the party's positions.

"You can’t be the secretary general of a political party you don’t believe in. If one is secretary general, s/he must support the party they are a member of. Period!" he stated.

Miguna further challenged Sifuna and his allies, whom he referred to as the "Linda Tumbo Group", to leave ODM and either join or establish a political party that aligns with their political beliefs.

"Sifuna and his Linda Tumbo Group should be honest and courageous enough to leave ODM and either join or form a political party they believe in," he said.

The lawyer argued that political leaders should not seek to retain positions in parties whose policies or leadership they oppose.

"You cannot eat and have your cake at the same time," he added.

He called for what he termed "political hygiene" in Kenya, urging political parties and leaders to uphold ideological consistency and accountability.

His remarks come amid ongoing debate within ODM over Sifuna's position and his recent criticism of some of the party's decisions and political alliances.
