Two arrested as detectives seize Sh4.6 million cannabis haul in Nakuru

Two suspects have been arrested after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) intercepted a major consignment of cannabis sativa valued at approximately Sh4.62 million in Nakuru.

The operation was conducted along the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway after detectives received intelligence reports that a vehicle was being used to transport the consignment.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers laid an ambush along the route and signalled the vehicle to stop when it was spotted.

However, the driver failed to comply and attempted to flee, triggering a chase towards the Subukia area.

Detectives later managed to immobilise the vehicle by deflating one of its front tyres, bringing the pursuit to an end and allowing officers to arrest the two occupants.

A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of seven sacks containing cannabis sativa weighing a total of 154 kilogrammes.

The drugs were allegedly being transported for distribution.

“The suspects are currently in custody, undergoing processing pending arraignment. Meanwhile, the recovered narcotics are being detained as exhibits,” the DCI said.

The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying the fight against narcotics trafficking and urged members of the public to continue providing information that could help dismantle drug distribution networks.

The latest seizure comes barely a month after another anti-narcotics operation in Kilifi led to the arrest of two suspected traffickers and the recovery of cannabis sativa worth about Sh4.2 million.

In the May 20 operation, ANU detectives acting on intelligence reports raided a house in the Kisumu Ndogo area of Kilifi town, where they recovered two-and-a-half sacks of cannabis sativa wrapped in brown khaki paper and weighing 142 kilogrammes.

The suspects were arrested and taken to Kilifi police station alongside the recovered drugs as officers launched investigations into the suspected trafficking network.

In a separate operation conducted on the same day in Kieni East subcounty, police acting on information from a member of the public recovered 784 rolls of cannabis sativa hidden in a shop and a nearby rented house.

The operation also led to the recovery of several mobile phones believed to have been used in drug sale transactions and assorted equipment suspected to have been used in preparing and packaging the narcotics.
