Former Chief Justice David Maraga and Jubilee Deputy party leader Fred Matiang’i on Friday held talks in what appeared to be a renewed effort to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the 2027 general election.
The meeting, announced through statements shared by both leaders, comes amid ongoing consultations within opposition circles aimed at building a broader political coalition.
Maraga said the discussions formed part of wider engagements with opposition leaders seeking to create a united political front.
“This morning, Fred Matiang’i and I held talks as part of ongoing consultations with other opposition leaders to enhance opposition unity with the hope of building a broad coalition committed to transforming Kenya,” Maraga said.
He added that the discussions were anchored on governance reforms and institutional renewal.
“The overarching goal remains forming a government based on constitutionalism and rule of law, and the total eradication of state capture and corruption,” he said.
Matiang’i echoed similar sentiments, framing the engagement as part of efforts to consolidate opposition forces.
“Enhancing opposition unity as we seek to liberate Kenya. It was a pleasure catching up with Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga as we continue building a broad, united front committed to a better future for all Kenyans,” Matiang’i said.
The public display of cooperation between the two leaders highlights shifting dynamics within opposition politics heading into the next election cycle.
Although no formal coalition announcement was made, the language used by both leaders pointed to attempts to rally support around a shared political agenda centred on governance reforms and accountability.
Maraga, who served as Chief Justice, has in recent months increasingly taken public positions on governance and constitutional issues, positioning himself as a key voice in conversations around leadership and institutional integrity.
Matiang’i, who served in the previous administration and has also signalled political ambitions, has been linked to wider opposition consultations as leaders explore possible alliances ahead of 2027.
The Friday meeting also comes amid efforts by opposition figures to agree on a single presidential flagbearer.
Both Maraga and Matiang’i have publicly expressed interest in the presidency, setting up a political dynamic in which cooperation and negotiations could shape future alignments.
