The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way in Nairobi for three months to facilitate the construction and extension of pedestrian footbridges in the Westlands area.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, KeNHA said the affected section is on the Nakuru-bound carriageway between Karuna Close and the Westlands Roundabout.

The authority said the closure will take effect from June 25, 2026, and remain in place until September 25, 2026.

According to KeNHA, the traffic disruption is necessary to allow extension works on the existing pedestrian footbridge at Dunhill Towers and the construction of the proposed Fogo Gaucho–QuickMart Westlands Footbridge.

"The Kenya National Highways Authority notifies the public that a section of Waiyaki Way (A8) Road from Karuna Close and Westlands Roundabout on the Nakuru-bound carriageway will be partially closed from Thursday, June 25, 2026, to Friday, September 25, 2026," the notice stated.

The authority advised motorists using the busy highway to exercise caution while approaching the affected area and to comply with traffic management measures that will be put in place throughout the construction period.

Motorists have also been urged to observe all temporary traffic signs and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals who will be deployed to manage traffic flow and minimise disruptions.

The planned works form part of efforts to improve pedestrian safety along one of Nairobi's busiest road corridors, which experiences heavy traffic volumes throughout the day.

KeNHA did not indicate whether alternative traffic routes would be introduced but warned motorists to expect changes in traffic movement within the affected section during the construction period.

The authority said the temporary closure is expected to facilitate the safe execution of the works while ensuring continued movement of vehicles along the highway.

KeNHA is a state corporation under the Ministry of Roads and Transport mandated to manage, develop, rehabilitate and maintain national highways across the country.

The agency oversees major road corridors linking cities, towns and border points and is responsible for ensuring safe and efficient movement of people and goods on Kenya's national road network.

The authority regularly undertakes road expansion, maintenance and safety improvement projects, including the construction of footbridges, interchanges and bypasses aimed at reducing congestion and enhancing road safety.
