Homa Bay fire kills child, injures two siblings

A four-year-old girl died while her two younger siblings sustained burn injuries after a fire razed a makeshift house in Suba Central subcounty, Homa Bay, police said.

The incident was reported on June 17, 2026, at about 1.02 am. According to police, the children’s mother had left her three children asleep in their mabati (iron-sheet) house at around 10 pm and went to a nearby shop, leaving a candle burning inside the house.

When she returned, she found the house engulfed in flames.

Members of the public responded and managed to extinguish the fire, but the four-year-old girl had already died from the burns.

Her siblings, aged three and two, sustained burn injuries and were rushed to Sindo Sub-County Hospital, where they were admitted in stable condition.

The body of the deceased was moved to the hospital mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police visited and documented the scene and launched investigations into the cause of the fire.

In a separate incident, police in Nairobi have upgraded an assault case to murder after a construction worker who was injured during a fight at a renovation site died while receiving treatment.

The incident was reported at Parklands Police Station in Gigiri on June 16, 2026.

According to police, the assault was initially reported on June 15 by a supervisor.

He told officers that two labourers, including the deceased, Andrew Sifuna, had been involved in a fight during which Sifuna sustained a head injury.

The injured worker was rushed to MP Shah Hospital, where he was admitted as investigations into the assault commenced.

Police arrested a suspect and placed him in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.

However, on the night of June 16, Sifuna’s relatives informed police that his condition had suddenly deteriorated and that he died at about 8.45 pm while undergoing treatment.

Police officers visited MP Shah Hospital and confirmed the death. The body was moved to the hospital mortuary, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

The suspect remains in police custody as detectives investigate the murder case and prepare for further legal action.

Elsewhere, police in Migori County are investigating the death of a 30-year-old woman whose body was found inside a borehole within her homestead a day after she was reported missing.

The incident was reported on June 16, 2026.

According to police, Agnes Awuor Wayumba disappeared from her home on June 15 at about 10 am. Family members and residents searched for her, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

At around 2 pm on June 16, her body was discovered inside a borehole within the compound.

Police officers, assisted by members of the public, retrieved the body from the borehole.

Investigators noted that the deceased had a history of epilepsy, a factor that will form part of ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The body was moved to Migori County Referral Hospital Mortuary for preservation and a post-mortem examination. Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Suna West are handling the case.
