The African Union (AU) Commission has welcomed the signed peace agreement between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant breakthrough that could help end hostilities and promote lasting peace in the Middle East.

In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf praised the agreement as a demonstration of the power of diplomacy and dialogue in resolving conflicts and strengthening relations between nations.

Youssouf said the accord offers renewed hope for peace, stability, and cooperation in a region whose security and prosperity have far-reaching implications for the rest of the world.

“This agreement demonstrates the power of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts and building trust between nations,” he said.

“It offers renewed hope for peace, stability, and cooperation in a region whose security and prosperity have global significance.”

The AU Commission Chairperson commended the leadership shown by all parties involved in the negotiations, noting that constructive engagement and political goodwill had been critical in reaching the historic agreement.

He also acknowledged the role played by United States President Donald J. Trump in advancing efforts that contributed to the conclusion of the deal. In addition, Youssouf recognised the mediation and facilitation efforts of Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar, whose diplomatic engagement helped create an environment conducive to dialogue and confidence-building between Washington and Tehran.

The peace agreement comes amid years of strained relations and recurring tensions between the two countries, which have often raised concerns about security and stability across the Middle East and beyond.

Youssouf expressed optimism that the agreement would pave the way for long-term peace, improved regional stability, and stronger international cooperation.

He emphasised that the development aligns with the African Union’s longstanding commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful means rather than confrontation.

“The African Union stands ready to support all initiatives that advance peace, cooperation, and mutual respect among nations,” the Chairperson stated.

The AU’s endorsement of the agreement reflects growing international support for diplomatic solutions to global conflicts and highlights the organisation’s commitment to promoting peace and stability both within Africa and across the international community.
