A second firearm has been voluntarily surrendered in Lokwamosing as the disarmament exercise in Turkana County continues to strengthen community-led peacebuilding /HANDOUT.

A second firearm has been voluntarily surrendered in Lokwamosing as the ongoing intelligence-led disarmament exercise in Turkana county continues to record steady progress, with security agencies crediting sustained community cooperation for the latest breakthrough.

The firearm was handed over today to the Officer Commanding Station in Lokwamosing by a member of the public, marking another step in efforts to reduce the circulation of illegal weapons in the region. The surrender comes just days after an earlier recovery under the same operation.

Security officials described the latest development as a positive sign that local residents are increasingly embracing peaceful means of resolving insecurity linked to illicit arms.

One senior officer involved in the operation said voluntary surrender remains central to the success of the campaign.

“Every weapon surrendered voluntarily removes a potential source of violence from our communities. What we are seeing in Turkana is growing trust between residents and security agencies, and that is critical for long-term peace,” the National Police Service stated.

The National Police Service said the exercise continues to rely heavily on cooperation from residents, elders and local leadership structures to identify and remove illegal firearms from circulation.

Authorities also urged continued reporting of suspicious activity through local police stations and established toll-free channels.

This latest surrender follows an earlier case recorded on June 15, 2026, when another AK-47 rifle was voluntarily handed over in Lochakula Location within Turkana East subcounty.

That earlier recovery was also linked to the broader intelligence-driven disarmament campaign coordinated by the National Police Service.

At the time, police noted that sustained community sensitisation efforts were beginning to yield results, with residents showing increased willingness to surrender illegal weapons without coercion. An officer involved in the earlier operation said the trend was encouraging.

“We are not only recovering firearms; we are also rebuilding trust. The fact that residents are voluntarily coming forward shows that peace messaging is reaching the grassroots,” the National Police Service stated.
