Police in Vihiga county have arrested a suspect and recovered a consignment of suspected cannabis sativa (bhang) during an intelligence-driven operation along the Chavakali–Kapsabet Highway in Tiriki East subcounty.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Cheptulu police station acted on credible intelligence that led them to intercept a vehicle at the Musasa area.

A thorough search of the vehicle revealed several packages of green plant material, wrapped in yellow cellotape and concealed in different compartments of the car. The substances are suspected to be cannabis sativa.

The driver of the vehicle was immediately arrested and taken into custody pending further investigations and possible prosecution.

The National Police Service confirmed the operation, saying it was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks across the country.

“Acting on credible intelligence, officers successfully intercepted a vehicle and recovered suspected narcotics concealed within,” the service said in a statement shared on its official communication channels.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will be processed in accordance with the law as investigations continue.”

NPS further praised members of the public for their continued cooperation in reporting criminal activities, noting that community intelligence remains a key pillar in fighting drug-related crimes.

“The public plays a critical role in supporting law enforcement. We encourage citizens to continue sharing timely and accurate information,” the statement said.

Authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining pressure on drug traffickers and criminal networks operating within Vihiga county and other parts of the country. The police warned that those found involved in narcotics trafficking will face firm legal action.

Investigations into the origin and intended destination of the recovered substances are ongoing, with police expected to build a broader case around possible supply networks linked to the seizure.
