Gospel musician and former presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame has pledged to support for former Chief Justice David Maraga’s 2027 presidential bid.
While announcing the support, Kigame also urged the youth to rally behind Maraga, who will be contesting for the top seat on United Green Movement Party ticket.
The former Chief Justice made the plea during the former Chief Justice’s State of the Nation address at Ufungumano House in Nairobi.
In his address, Kigame noted that the country faces three main issues; greed, corruption and blame.
“You are aware of the problems we have, and now you must look for solutions, which are new faces in office,” he stated.
Kigame also expressed his disapproval of politicians who use violence to silence their opponents, as he lamented over the deaths of several youth over the past few years, branding such leaders as people with ‘hearts of animals’.
Kigame ended his remarks with a surprise performance of his hit song ‘Enda Nasi’.
The meeting took place just days after Maraga’s arrest during Nairobi National Park protests last week.
Maraga was arrested on June 8, while protesting against, among other things, what activists are alleging is a plan to build a car park on protected land belonging to a wildlife sanctuary in the capital, Nairobi.
He was among a group of demonstrators who were marching along a road running close to the Nairobi National Park.
The 117-sq-km (45-sq-mile) site is a popular conservation area and tourist spot within Nairobi.
Maraga declared he will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election in March last year.
Speaking on Sunday in Kisii after a church service, Maraga said he is ready to offer himself for the top job from where he will be able to initiate change.
The former CJ was, however, quick to point out that the final word rests with the electorate, while dismissing that he is not anyone's project.
"At the end of the day, it is the people who will
decide. Just relax, wait and in due course you will make your mind yourself
whether or not I'm a state project," he said.
