Two Kenyan adventurers have completed a remarkable 45,470-kilometre road trip from Nairobi to London, capping off a four-month journey that took them through 57 countries across Africa and Europe.

Becky Kim and Bonnie Koko arrived in the United Kingdom on June 12, bringing to an end an expedition that began in Nairobi on February 13 and traversed deserts, mountains, highways and remote northern regions before reaching the British capital.

Their route took them across some of the world's most challenging terrains, including the Sahara Desert and the Kalahari, before continuing through Europe and beyond the Arctic Circle.

The journey, which lasted 120 days, showcased an extraordinary test of endurance, planning and resilience.

The pair were welcomed at the Kenya High Commission in London by outgoing UK Deputy High Commissioner Ambassador Joseph Warui before meeting Kenya's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Maurice Makoloo.

Their arrival drew attention from Kenyans living abroad as well as non-Kenyans curious about the Kenyan-registered vehicle that had travelled thousands of kilometres across two continents.

Reflecting on the moment, Ambassador Makoloo said seeing a Kenyan vehicle on the streets of London was a memorable experience.

"There was something magical about seeing a Kenyan-registered vehicle on the streets of London. Not just for me or the staff of the Kenya mission in the UK," he said.

Makoloo noted that many people approached the vehicle to share their experiences and connections with Kenya.

"The number of non-Kenyans who moved close to the car to tell us of their Kenyan experiences was incredible and totally unexpected," he said.

He said the travellers' account of their journey reflected qualities often associated with Kenyans.

"Listening to Becky Kim and Boniface Kioko tell their story of driving through 57 countries in Africa and Europe in 120 days told the full Kenyan story, courage, resilience and collaboration," Makoloo said.

The ambassador added that the final stop in the United Kingdom carried symbolic significance.

"As I pinned that last flag to mark the UK as their last stop on this adventure that began in Kenya, it symbolized the strong cultural and historical relationship between our two countries," he said.

He described the sight of the Kenyan flag against London's iconic backdrop as a powerful image.

"As the Kenyan flag fluttered before the London double-decker bus, it was both an end and a beginning. It reminded us of the power and our better angels within us: to do good for humanity."

The Nairobi-to-London expedition has inspired many Kenyans at home and abroad, demonstrating what can be achieved through determination and a pioneering spirit.

For the duos, the successful completion of the 45,470km journey marks not only the end of an ambitious adventure but also a milestone that places them among a growing number of Africans pushing the boundaries of exploration and overland travel.
