Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared confidence in his ability to secure the opposition’s presidential ticket, saying he possesses the political strength, structures and networks needed to mount a successful campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.

Gachagua, who announced the commencement of consultations aimed at unifying opposition forces behind a single candidate, said he remains optimistic that he could emerge as the coalition’s preferred flagbearer.

“I have the capacity, the infrastructure and the networks. I remain hopeful I will be that candidate,” he said, expressing confidence in his national political reach and grassroots mobilisation structures.

He made the remarks on Tuesday when he addressed the press while outlining what he described as an ongoing internal process within the opposition to determine who will ultimately face President William Ruto in the next general election.

According to him, the process is being guided by consultations involving political leaders, community representatives, professionals and other stakeholders.

Despite his confidence, Gachagua insisted that the final decision must be collective.

He said he would respect any outcome reached through consensus among opposition leaders, even if it does not favour him personally.

“If any of my colleagues is agreed upon as the single presidential candidate, I will support that decision fully,” he said, adding that unity remains the most important objective for the opposition.

He argued that fragmentation within the opposition would weaken its chances, stressing that a united front is the only viable path to challenging the current administration.

“Having a single presidential candidate is not negotiable if we are serious about changing the direction of this country,” he said.

Gachagua also suggested that the opposition is working on structured engagement frameworks to ensure a transparent and acceptable process of selecting a candidate.

He said discussions involve both formal and informal consultations across regions.

“We are engaging stakeholders, elders, professionals and youth. This is not about individual ambition alone; it is about national direction,” he said.

While maintaining his ambition, Gachagua emphasised that he would not allow personal interests to override collective decision-making.

“Even if I do not become the flag bearer, I will still lead in mobilising support for whoever is chosen,” he said.

He further reiterated his commitment to political organisation within the opposition, saying he is ready to work with other leaders in building what he described as a “united alternative government.”

However, he maintained that he remains a strong contender in the internal race, citing his experience in national politics and his established support base.

“I know what it takes to run a national campaign. I have been part of it before, and I understand the ground,” he said.

Gachagua’s remarks come a day after the High Court ruling upheld his impeachment, dealing a blow to his presidential ambition

He has, however, announced he will appeal the court ruling.
