Mlima Kiu area along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway in Salama is said to be a black spot.
Many cases of road accidents resulting from head-on collisions due to overspeeding, overtaking, and poor visibility have always been reported along the Mlima Kiu stretch.
Sultan Hamud Subcounty hospital receives lots of accident victims whenever such accidents happen on the highway.
The hospital handles most Salama crashes due to proximity. This stretch has a history of fatal crashes.
On February 21, 2026, five people died after a matatu belonging to Naekana Sacco collided head-on with a lorry during heavy rains.
Residents have repeatedly blamed KeNHA for failing to redesign/widen the Salama stretch despite multiple fatal accidents.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), together with police have continued urging motorists to avoid speeding, careless overtaking, and driving at night on this section of the highway.
