Detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) and the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU) have arrested two suspects in an intelligence-led operation targeting a narcotics trafficking network operating within and around Nairobi.
The operation, conducted on Wednesday, followed credible intelligence that suspects linked to the trafficking ring were planning a narcotics exchange in Syokimau, Machakos county.
Acting swiftly on the information, a team of detectives moved to the area in a bid to intercept the individuals and disrupt the planned transaction.
However, upon arrival, officers established that the meeting had been called off before the exchange could take place.
Investigators say fresh information obtained from covert sources shortly afterwards indicated that the suspects had relocated to another area.
Acting on the real-time intelligence, officers redirected the operation to Ruaka in Kiambu county, where the individuals were believed to have regrouped.
A search conducted at a residence within an apartment in Ruaka led to the recovery of several items linked to narcotics trafficking.
Among the exhibits recovered were pellets and packages containing substances thought to be narcotic drugs.
Detectives also seized digital weighing scales, commonly used in the measurement and packaging of drugs.
Additional items recovered during the operation included several mobile phones, foreign passports and cash in both Kenyan and Nigerian currencies.
Two suspects were arrested at the premises during the operation.
Following the arrests, the suspects were detained at Ruaraka and Pangani police stations as investigations into the trafficking network continued.
Authorities have since secured all recovered exhibits, which will undergo forensic analysis to determine the exact nature and quantity of the substances seized.
Investigators say the analysis is expected to help establish possible links between the suspects and other individuals believed to be part of a wider trafficking network.
Police indicated that the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking and dismantle organised criminal groups operating within the country.
The two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court as detectives continue investigations aimed at identifying additional accomplices and uncovering the full scope of the drug distribution network.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to support efforts to curb narcotics trafficking by sharing information with investigators through official reporting channels.
