Former Chief Justice David Maraga has urged lawyers to elect officials who can stand firm against a rogue regime as LSK heads to the polls tomorrow.
He said the Law Society of Kenya holds a critical role, especially now that the country is headed into the 2027 general election.
“Dear colleagues and learned friends, we have elections for our president tomorrow. As we think about the election of our president, I want you to bear in mind the role of the Law Society in this country,” Maraga said.
Maraga spoke in Embu after touring several counties to sensitise residents to register as voters.
So far, the presidential candidate and the UDM co-party leader has traversed Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Tana River, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo and Mertu counties.
He urged young people to obtain IDs and register as voters, cautioning that without resolute leadership, a rogue administration would have “an unmitigated field day in killing, abducting, maiming and torturing young Kenyans who questioned the runaway trajectory”.
The former CJ warned that the country faces “anonymous” challenges that demand a vigilant and courageous legal fraternity.
“So I want you to think seriously about that as we elect our president. And I want to wish all of us a peaceful election. My wish is the best candidate wins, so that we can continue to play our role as lawyers in the governance of this country,” he said.
Maraga said without resolute leadership, the current administration would have “an unmitigated field day in killing, abducting, maiming and torturing young Kenyans who questioned the runaway trajectory of an excessively corrupt regime.
He urged the next LSK president to refuse compromise, act decisively and ensure the constitution is upheld “to the letter”.
The former CJ praised outgoing
president Faith Odhiambo and her council for their courage, saying tomorrow’s
leadership is not jus about welfare, but safeguarding Kenya’s democratic
future.
