Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers have arrested a man over his social media posts questioning wealth linked to the country’s political class.
The 30-year-old man was accused of incitement and spreading false information after he appeared to ask Kenyans to seize any property owned by politicians as it was ‘ill-gotten wealth’.
In the post on X, one Boniface Mulinge Muteti is said to have asked the public ‘arm themselves and prepare for a revolutions’, words which DCI deems as offensive to the law.
The post claimed that politicians have never worked anywhere, innovated or invented anything yet they have a lot of wealth.
Detectives from the Special Crime Unit (SCU) yesterday arraigned Muteti before the Milimani Law Courts, accusing him of disseminating false information on his X account.
On December 6, 2025, police say Muteti, who is described as a blogger and human rights activist, under the username Mulinge Muteti, made a provocative post.
“Boniface Mulinge Muteti on December 6, 2025, at an unknown place within the Republic of Kenya, while using your X account under the name Mulinge Muteti with the username @mulinge_muteti_, you published information, to wit, ‘If you come across anything owned by politicians, anza kuchukua.’ These people have never worked anywhere, innovated or invented anything. Everything they own was stolen from Kenyans and must be returned to Kenyans.”
Police said the man made the post “knowing it to be false and intending to incite violence among the public, in direct violation of Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act No. 5 of 2018.”
During his appearance in court, Muteti pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and was granted bail set at Sh15,000 by Milimani Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina. The case is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on December 30, 2025.
His lawyers requested the court to direct that the prosecution supplies them with list of witnesses nd evidence for them to prepare their defence; an application that was granted.
"The accused is granted cash bail of Sh15,000 with one contact person. The matter will be mentioned on December 30, 2025,” Magistrate Onyina ruled.
Police are now warning Kenyans to be warry on what they post online as it can land them in trouble.
“The DCI reminds Kenyans that spreading false information online is a criminal offence and urges responsible use of social media,” DCI said in a statement.
