Police have recovered a gun that was grabbed from Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma's bodyguard during a by-election exercise in Kasipul constituency.

Some youths are reported to have taken away the gun when a fracas emerged at Agoro Sare Primary school in Oyugis town.

The gun was dropped on the ground by people said to have stolen it.

The gun was lost when the bodyguard was protecting Kaluma as he was being assaulted by youths.

The youths did not want Kaluma to be at the polling station over accusations of interfering with the voting process.

Both the MP and his bodyguard were injured during the confrontation.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem said police acted on intelligence reports to recover the firearm.

He said his officers relied on information they got from their informers to get the gun.

“It was dropped on the ground. We also recovered the ammunition from the gun,” Koilem said.

Police plan to conduct a forensic examination on the firearm to check if it was used during the time it was stolen.

Koilem said the incident led to tension in the region.

Koilem said they had to swing into action to contain the situation.

More than 20 people were arrested as they were ferrying weapons. Koilem said the suspects were arrested and detained at Oyugis Police Station.

“We also impounded 15 vehicles and two motorcycles that the youths were using. The youths had machetes, knives and other metals. The area is now calm,” he said.
