President William Ruto has sent a message of condolence to the family of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga following the death of his sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga.
Ruto described Beryl as “a trailblazer whose distinguished professional journey took her across the African continent, from Kenya to Zimbabwe.”
“She made her mark as an exceptional urban planner in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, where her expertise and commitment contributed to transformative urban development,” he said in a statement.
The President added that Beryl later served “with honour” as Chairperson of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company from 2020, championing reforms that strengthened the utility and improved service delivery.
“We mourn the loss of a great intellectual and a pioneering woman who opened doors and lit the path for many career women. On my own behalf and that of all Kenyans, I convey heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga on Beryl’s passing,” he said.
Kanu chairman Gideon Moi also condoled with the family, describing Beryl as a dedicated professional who served both as a teacher and an advocate, and demonstrated commitment in public service, including at Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.
“Our hearts go out to the entire Odinga family,” Moi said, assuring them of support during the difficult period.
ODM secretary general and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna sent his condolences as well, saying the party stands with the family.
“It has been a very difficult last few days, but we are here to support you,” he said.
Beryl, a younger sister of Raila Odinga, died while receiving treatment, according to the family.
Although she kept a low political profile, one of her daughters, Ami Ambala, serves as a nominated member of the Nairobi County Assembly on an ODM ticket.
Confirming the news earlier, Ruth Odinga said the family was devastated by the loss.
“It is with a heavy heart, but accepting the will of God, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga,” she said.
Ruth described Beryl as a devoted mother and a pillar within the family.
“Beryl was a loving mother to Ami Auma, Chizi and Taure,” she said. “She was sister to Senator Oburu Oginga, Rt Hon Raila Odinga, Akinyi Wenwa and myself, among others.”
She also acknowledged the extended family who shared in the grief, noting: “She was sister-in-law to Dr Anne Oburu, Dr Canon Ida Odinga, Hon Tabu Osewe and Judy Oburu.”
Ruth said the family was taking comfort in faith despite the deep sorrow.
“While we are deeply saddened by her demise and the immense void left in our lives, we take solace in the belief that she is safe in the Lord’s arms,” she said.
“We are thankful for the invaluable gift of the time we were privileged to share with her and for the profound impact she had on all who knew her.”
