Shock gripped residents of Kipipiri village in Nyandarua County after a 65-year-old woman attacked her three grandchildren with an axe and a stick before taking her own life.
Detectives have launched investigations into the disturbing incident that left the community in disbelief.
The woman, identified as Esther Wanjiku, is believed to have died by suicide.
The motive was not immediately established.
Neighbours said the incident happened on the morning of November 10, 2025, when the woman armed herself with an axe and a wooden stick.
She then attacked her grandchildren aged 18, eight, and nine, leaving them with serious wounds.
It was then that she was thought to have gone into her semi-permanent iron-roofed house and hanged herself. Police said the body was found hanging from a truss with a rope tied around her neck.
The injured were admitted to North Kinangop Hospital for treatment and examination, while the body of the deceased was moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
Villagers gathered at the scene as police arrived to process it and moved the body to the mortuary.
Police said on Tuesday that the injured siblings were in stable condition in the hospital.
Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where a boda boda rider was murdered and robbed of his motorcycle in Matutu, Borabu, Nyamira County.
The deceased, identified as 23-year-old Reagan Nyamongo, was found with injuries on his head and right ear in a thicket in the area.
The man had not been seen for five days until November 10, 2025, when the body was discovered.
Police said the assailants were targeting his newly acquired motorcycle, and he is believed to have resisted the robbery, leading to the murder.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy. Such incidents have been on the rise amid calls for victims to cooperate with attackers for their own safety.
And in Kehancha, Migori County, a burglary suspect died after falling from the roof of a shop he and his accomplices were stealing from.
Police said they responded to screams from a shop attendant who reported that four suspected thieves had broken in after dismantling the roof on Monday.
The responding officers fired in the air to scare the gang, prompting three of them to escape. One of the suspects, who was trapped on the rooftop, tried to jump off but fell headfirst, sustaining serious injuries.
Police said he bled to death.
Some of the stolen items were recovered at the scene. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigations.
