Detectives are investigating an incident where a Form Four student was found dead after suspected death by suicide incident in the Lanet area, Nakuru County.

The female student was a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education from the Shunem Secondary School, police said.

She and other students were busy Sunday night revising for Mathematics paper that was scheduled for Monday, November 10, when the incident happened.

Witnesses said the 17-year-old student excused herself from the class where the other colleagues were and left for the dormitories.

Police said the teacher who was overseeing the preps became curious after she took long to return and asked other students to join in searching for her.

Minutes later, according to the police, the students were heard screaming from one of the classrooms after stumbling on the body hanging on a truss with a piece of cloth tied around her neck.

She had left what police termed as a suicide note in her locker addressed to her parents, police said. The note is being scrutinised to know if it is authentic.

The police were called to the scene and moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

The victim’s parents were informed and left devastated.

Police said the incident was among at least four reported separately in the country.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend. Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties, and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, a history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression, and bipolar disorder. The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an incident where a boda boda rider was murdered and robbed of his motorcycle in Matutu, Borabu, Nyamira County.

The deceased, identified as Reagan Nyamongo, 23 was found with injuries on his head and right ear in a thicket in the area.

The man had not been seen for five days until November 10, 2025, when the body was discovered.

Police said the assailants were targeting his newly acquired motorcycle, and he is believed to have resisted the robbery, leading to the murder.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy. Such incidents have been on the rise amid calls on victims to always cooperate with their attackers for their own safety.
