A coalition of smaller political parties has announced a joint initiative aimed at safeguarding their participation in the country’s democratic process.
The announcement was made in Naivasha following the Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) National Steering Committee elections.
The coalition, formed through a memorandum of understanding, expressed concern over what it described as increasing administrative challenges faced by non-parliamentary parties.
These include alleged difficulties in accessing public funding and compliance scrutiny by the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).
The parties emphasised their commitment to pursuing legal and political avenues to ensure fair treatment under the law.
Leader of the National Liberal Party (NLP) Augustus Kyalo Muli was named the coalition’s spokesperson.
Muli vowed to lead the charge in protecting Kenya's multi-party democracy, which he stated is under severe threat.
"Our commitment for multiparty democracy is still alive. We will come together especially as we prepare for 2027 elections, we assure the country that we still believe in democracy."
Muli further pledged to resist any attempts to undermine the political space for smaller parties, which he said have been marginalised and left vulnerable and without funding.
Leader of the Empowerment and Liberation Party (ELP) Rose Mulwa affirmed the coalition’s resolve to protect the existence of parties without parliamentary representation.
Mulwa emphasised their collective resolve to ensure the survival of parties without parliamentary representation.
"Today we are forming an opposition body where we are going to safeguard the parties. We did not lose because we are weak, we lost because we stand for the right thing," she said.
Justice and Freedom Party leader Justus Juma added that the coalition is committed to preserving Kenya’s multi-party framework.
"As we have united today, we know as emerging parties that we will be protectd if we stand together. So, let's stand together and we ask you Kenyans yo stand with us. If you stand with us, our problems especially regarding the economy will change."
The coalition’s formation signals a coordinated effort by smaller parties to assert their role in the country's political landscape and advocate for equitable treatment within the country’s democratic institutions.
