Police in Machakos are investigating an incident where a man was lynched after allegedly hacking his girlfriend under unclear circumstances.
Machakos Subcounty police commander Nzioka Singi said the unidentified man was beaten to death by irate members of the public after he reportedly murdered Susan Nyaboke in cold blood.
The twin incidents happened at Mwanyani village on the outskirts of Machakos town on Monday.
The deaths were reported to the Machakos police station as murder and lynching incidents shortly after they happened.
"I received a phone call about murder and lynching incidents that happened here. I rushed to the scene and established that a woman named Susan Nyaboke, who works with a local microfinance institution, had been murdered by her boyfriend, " Singi told reporters at the scene.
The chief detective said the man trailed the woman on her way to work before committing the heinous act in the village located along Machakos- Kitui Road within Machakos county.
He said the man, said to be a student at a local college within Machakos Township, had no identification documents when his body was found lying at the scene where he was lynched.
"The woman was on her way to work, and her boyfriend trailed her with the intent to kill her," Singi said.
Singi disclosed that a machete and two knives were recovered from the deceased man.
"The woman was hacked on the neck and died on the spot. The duo reportedly has a child together," Singi said.
Police removed the bodies to Machakos Level 5 hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem.
