Radio Africa Group has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as “a man of immense personal and political significance to Kenya.”
In a statement, the media group paid tribute to Raila as an extraordinary leader and exceptional individual whose influence shaped Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
The statement noted that Raila possessed a rare ability to understand Kenya’s complex political and social fabric.
“He recognised the fragility of the nation and knew when to intervene to steer it back from the brink of crisis,” the statement read.
Radio Africa Group acknowledged that this wisdom guided his decisions to collaborate with former Presidents Daniel Moi, Mwai Kibaki, Uhuru Kenyatta, and William Ruto—always placing national unity above personal ambition.
“Even in moments of electoral defeat, when his supporters were understandably upset, Raila demonstrated remarkable foresight,” the statement added. “He often set aside personal ambitions to lend legitimacy to those in power, prioritising national peace and stability.”
As leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila was remembered for his steadfast fight for democracy, constitutionalism, and equality.
The group also recognized his long struggle against the authoritarian rule of President Moi, crediting him for laying the foundation for a more open and progressive nation.
Radio Africa Group further described Raila as “a staunch defender of press freedom,” recalling his consistent support for journalists’ rights even when criticised by the media.
His actions reflected deep respect for democratic values and freedom of expression.
“Today, we join all Kenyans in mourning a remarkable leader—one who was truly a once-in-a-generation figure, a Pan-African at heart, and a consummate statesman,” the statement concluded, conveying condolences to his family and loved ones. “May his soul rest in peace.”
According to his family, the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will be buried on Sunday in a private ceremony attended by a small circle of relatives and close associates.
A State funeral service will be held on Friday at Nyayo Stadium, expected to draw local and international dignitaries.
Afterward, the body will be taken to his Karen home for an overnight stay before leaving Nairobi on Saturday for Kisumu, where it will lie in state for public viewing at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo.
Later, the body will travel by road to Bondo for another overnight stay before the Sunday burial, which will be conducted according to the traditions of the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), as announced by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, co-chair of the State Funeral Committee.
