The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a 17-day partial closure of a section of Likoni Road in Nairobi to allow for rehabilitation works.
Motorists using Likoni Road have been advised to prepare for traffic delays following the scheduled closure between the BAT Industries area and the Jogoo Road Junction.
According to KURA, the section will undergo rehabilitation from October 15 to October 31, 2025, as part of its ongoing urban road improvement programme.
In a public notice issued on Wednesday morning, the authority stated:
“Likoni Road (BAT Industries–Jogoo Rd Junction) to experience delays from 15th to 31st October 2025 due to road rehabilitation works. Kindly use alternative routes: Lunga Lunga, Outer Ring, Enterprise, and Lusaka Roads. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
The rehabilitation works will include road surface restoration and drainage improvement to enhance mobility along one of Nairobi’s busiest industrial corridors.
The section of Likoni Road connects key economic zones and serves as a major route for vehicles accessing the Industrial Area, City Stadium, and Jogoo Road.
KURA has urged motorists to plan their travel in advance and consider using the recommended alternative routes to avoid congestion.
Lunga Lunga and Outer Ring Roads will serve as the main diversions for heavy vehicles, while Enterprise and Lusaka Roads are suitable for light traffic heading toward the Central Business District.
Traffic officers and road marshals will be deployed to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the construction period.
KURA noted that the rehabilitation is part of a broader effort to modernize and upgrade key urban road networks across Nairobi.
The ongoing projects are designed to reduce travel time, improve drainage systems, and enhance connectivity between residential, industrial, and commercial zones. Once complete, the upgraded section of Likoni Road is expected to ease congestion, improve transport efficiency, and enhance overall traffic movement along the eastern parts of the city.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to completing the works within the stipulated timeline and restoring normal traffic as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has also announced a two-month partial closure of a section of Thika Road to facilitate construction works aimed at improving pedestrian safety.
In a notice released on Monday, October 13, 2025, KeNHA said traffic flow will be affected on both the Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound service lanes at the Kihunguro area from October 20 to December 20, 2025. The closure will allow for the construction of footbridge column bases and stub columns, which are essential for the new pedestrian bridge.
Although such construction typically takes three to four weeks, the authority has allocated two months to accommodate potential challenges such as traffic flow, site congestion, and weather-related delays.
Once completed, the footbridge is expected to reduce pedestrian accidents, ease congestion, and improve safety for road users along the busy Thika Superhighway.
